Who has abortions? The current numbers that we know as of 2003.
Kind of make one wonder why state and federal sex education funds are being reduced at the same time the pro-death crowds are calling for bans?
* At current rates, about 1 in 3 U.S. women will have had an abortion by the time they reach the age of 45.
* 54% of women seeking abortions experienced contraceptive failure.
* 61% of women who have abortions have had at least one previous birth and 48% of have had at least one prior abortion.
* 27% of women who have abortions and are open to disclosing their religion are Catholic and 43% are Protestants.
* 41% of U.S. abortions are obtained by non-Hispanic white women, 32% of all abortions are obtained by non-Hispanic Black women, 20% by Hispanic women, and 7% are obtained by other women of color.
* 19% of women receiving abortions are 15 - 19 years old; 56% are between 20-30 years of age.
* 57% of women who obtain abortions have family incomes under 200% of the poverty line. Low-income women are three times more likely to have abortions than those who are financially better off.
* About 16,000 women have abortions each year following an incident of rape or incest.
* 61% of minors who have abortions do so with at least one parent's knowledge. The great majority of parents support their daughter's decision to have an abortion.

I am quoting the CDC websites figures. They rely on the Grutmager Institute a quazi gov. agency. That number has dropped a bit in the past couple of years for total numbers because of the availability of the "emergengy contraception" pill.
If you will investigate yourself, you can write the query anyway you want to. The database is public.

To answer the original question, 16,000 is used because it looks more dramatic.
I've actually looked for this percentage before, and have seen it no higher than 5%. It's really a hard stat to track accurately, though, if you think about it...

Your saying 1/3 of women in 2003 had an abortion? Wow.

I think the pro-death crowd would like to see each abortion given a name and burial. I wonder if that is where the gov't. is spending the funds it take out of the prevention and sex education budget? Or maybe the poverty efforts are getting the redirected moneys? Oh wait, maybe the budget is being redirected to social programs in the states so they can address the sex education and prevention concerns?

The numbers can be expressed in percentages or integers. I guess the scientists assume we can do math. The total population of women is 149.1 million. One third of those has had an abortion. 16% of those were reported due to rape.

Why do they list a number and not a percent when they talk about abortions for incest or rape?
What % of the total number of abortions is 16,000?
